o mi gawd I was very close to snatching up a little kitten I saw on the sidewalk on my way home tonight! lot's of stray unspayed cats in this neighboorhood.
I could *easily* be one of those women who have 97 cats, if I owned a house.

Thu, September 23, 2004 - 6:30 PMandy warhol and his mother had an insane amount of cats - rumoured to be around 80 at one time. i can see that, although i'd want them all to vie for my attention and have nightly cat battles over who would grace my lap.
i'm fucking sick yo -

Thu, September 23, 2004 - 8:28 PMedward gorey was a big cat freak, left his estate to his cats, I think. I heard or read an interview where he said he felt emotionally abused by the cats. I can relate.
I want dogs and a llama eventually. -

Re: cat lady
Fri, September 24, 2004 - 6:13 AMI hate the idea that my place might smell bad AND I hate to clean. I can't afford to pay someone else to do the cleaning there fore I won't be getting any more housemates till my income goes up considerably.
I'm very good about the litter box but there's cat hair everywhere as it is. Thankfully I am allergic so I have to kind of stay on top of it or else I sneeze a lot and can't breathe.
It is hard to give what feels like the right amount and equal amounts of attention to three cats so I don't know how those people do it. I just like that they loose control and keep picking up more animals despite what everyone who knows them must say. -

Re: cat lady
Fri, September 24, 2004 - 9:18 AMIf it weren't for the baby and my husband's allergies, I would have even more cats (we have 3), plus dogs and horses. I've always wanted a horse but my hubby is SOOOO allergic so I have to settle for going to the State Fair once a year and petting them.
I hear you Grrl on the cleaning! We bought a new vacuum and you wouldn't believe how disgusting it was when we emptied the bag and saw all the hair. You could stuff a mattress with Prince's hair alone! I'm paranoid that our daughter will develop allergies so I try to keep "de-hairing" the house but it's hard ... -

Re: cat lady
Fri, September 24, 2004 - 10:52 AMmy mom now has three dogs (old english sheepdogs, a.k.a. friggin huge and cuddly), five cats (all siamese or tonks) and four birds (three macaws and one medium-sized breed i can never remember the name of).
i love to visit and i really love every single on of those animals...except for the birds when they're in a mood because i don't much like the idea of losing a finger...but i don't like the fact that these animals get very little attention. when they get it, they are very much loved. the house is kept clean and they always have food and water, but my parents aren't home that much. so yeah, it's great that they've taken in all these great animals and it would break my heart if a single one of them was given away, but i think they need to...not ever adopt another lifeform again. and those birds would be a lot friendlier if they were shown more attention. if you're going to domesticate an animal, be attentive. otherwise, let it go.
my dream would be to have a big house in the country, spend my time writing and hopefully making money off of it and have a slew of indoor/outdoor cats who could do as they pleased. nowhere near my reality, though.

Fri, September 24, 2004 - 6:57 PMI live out my Crazy Cat Lady fantasies at the Humane Society. I walk into one of the colony rooms and I'm like, haha, these are ALL MY CATS and I get to pet them! And it's all love and fun and games, until someone takes a massive poo in the litterbox in the corner and I'm like, FUCK. And then I whip out the litter scoop. Sigh. -

Re: cat lady
Mon, September 27, 2004 - 3:30 PMI daren't even go near shelters any more. I have two babies and I could so easily cross that line. I've even seriously debated with friends how many cats you need to have before you cross over into the crazy cat lady territory. I think we fixed it on four.
But, for the quality of Peeps and Blue's lives (and mine as we live in NYC in a small one-bedroom), it will be fixed at two cats so they can both be suitably adored. -

Re: cat lady
Tue, October 5, 2004 - 2:26 PMI was discussing the cat-lady line with some colleagues in gender and sexuality studies last night and they thought three was the crossover. Of course, this is in NYC, and my brother has three in Surrey, UK and all is perfectly fine. One of my colleagues did, however, say that the number of cats you can safely have is one more than the number of rooms you have, but that gets you into the debate about whether the kitchen and bathroom count. I sense she's after a third.
Indeed, I could probably have 8 and seem well adjusted too (especially after ogling over those Siberians online), but then "seem" is the operative word... And, yes, there for the grace of God go I. -

jen (my bestest friend) just reminded me that we're also only going to have two visitors: our friend dan and his boyfriend, wigand. they'll come to visit once a year (we haven't picked the holiday yet) and everyone will think they're our dates.
the plan is progressing. -

Re: cat lady
Wed, October 6, 2004 - 10:40 AMmy old rule was no more than one cat per person in the household (a lap per cat)...but that broke down when I still had my two cats when I was living on my own. I swore, I did, no more than two. Then I changed my mind.
Zot and Mymble will both sit on my lap at once (hurrah! they are pals!).
So I changed the rule: no more than one cat per hand in the household (so each cat can be stroked/scritched at the same time if they get into a simultaneous petmepetmepetme frenzy.
so, room for one more. bwahahaha.
(p.s. moya: i understand the ogling over siberians. Kitsune agrees that he is gorgeous.) -

Re: cat lady
Wed, October 6, 2004 - 11:58 AMi fear my cat ladyship may be coming a bit sooner than i thought. there's an adorable little white and gray cat without a collar in our neighborhood. she's been around for a few months and i always assumed that she belonged to someone. every time i see her, i always hang out with her and pet her and i just love her. recently my friend dan (who is allergic, but loves animals anyway) let her follow hiim into his apartment, where she hung out for a few hours, then went back outside on her own. then jen saw signs posted in the area asking if she belonged to anyone, to be sure.
so now i'm thinking...if she doesn't belong to anyone, i don't want her to not have a home. she's fine as an indoor/outdoor cat, but i want her to have a place to call her own. so i am dangerously close to taking her to the vet, having her checked out and adopting her. ricky and frankie will hate it, of course, but we looked after a cat for a few months a couple of years ago and they eventually became friends, so it should be fine...i hope. -

Re: cat lady
Wed, October 6, 2004 - 2:20 PMyou never fail to amaze me with your eloquence, darling brou. can i call you a "furriner," please?
well, i don't know how long to wait...i mean, i can take her in and she can still go out again, so that's not a problem. even if she is someone else's, there's obviously no harm in me giving her shelter and food and love.
what could be a problem is that i don't know if she needs shots or anything at the vet. the last time i adopted a stray, i took her in for the night (because it was raining and she was obviously looking for shelter), but the next morning i took her to the vet. she got a clean bill of health, gave me a scar on my cheek (it was an accident, or my fault if anything) and went home to live with me and my kitten, bodi (whom i still miss terribly). i just don't want to take her in only to found out she's given something to ricky and frankie. and i can't really afford a vet visit...but i want her to come leave with me so much! if only dan and jen weren't allergic, then at least she'd have a home until i get paid again. -

Wed, October 6, 2004 - 2:39 PMbut stan has a home, and a good one at that.
the stray i adopted before, beebo, was left on her own again. it broke my heart, but i had nowhere to live for three months. i swear i would have kept her in my car with me if i could have, but i was also working in berkeley and had been living 30 minutes away in concord when i adopted her. i couldn't find anyone to take her in, it was awful. i just left hoping that the next people who lived in that house would do something for her. she was seriously one of the coolest cats i'd ever known. she was a huge main coon, probably about ten years old and she was smarter than most of the people i know. -
