Lately I've noticed that Elvis has developed alot of dandruff on his back near the base of his tail. When I brush him it just spreads all over his back. He's in good health, considering his age (15 at the end of this month!) and diabetes. Any ideas on what might be causing this?
P.S. Thanks Demi for putting E's photo up!

Re: Flakes?
Fri, August 13, 2004 - 9:03 PMHappy (almost) birthday to Elvis! Dave turned 14 in June. Glad there are some senior thugz around. :) Don't know about the flakes... could it just be dry skin? Maybe some omega oil would help. Candy, what do you think? -

Sat, August 14, 2004 - 5:25 AMword, elvis is a virgo like max.... awesome. i think that is a gorgeous picture of him! easy e, betta check yo self.
hmm. with the flaking skin - i read that a cats skin is where the first signs of an allergy can appear... maybe he's developed a reaction to something? have you been feeding him the same thing? can elvis eat herring or salmon? like cat mentioned these fish have high omega content - and fatty acids that could help.
maybe try mixing it with egg yolk and some yeasties. i'll await confirmation from mistress candy of catilvania... -

Sat, August 14, 2004 - 7:24 AMI'm sure Elvis (and the other 2) would go nutzo if I gave him some herring or salmon. I don't think it would affect his diabetes. I'll have to give it a try ... -

Re: Flakes?
Sun, August 15, 2004 - 12:04 PMStan developed an allergy to fleas and dust later in life (bloody typical) his symptoms were dandruff, scaly dry skin and an almost greasy coat (very unattractive!) I don't know if Elvis has those other symptoms? Anyway I've used one of those flea spray things on him that you soak their coat twice a year with and he's been back to glossy pelted romeo ever since. See picture of his 14th birthday this month

Re: Flakes?
Sun, August 15, 2004 - 10:02 PMAs cats get older, they digest fats less and less efficiently. So supplementing the food with a good fat source like salmon oil, butter and egg yolks is definitely worth trying. Just remember that if supplementing with fish-based or plant-based oils more than a couple times a week to add some vitamin E to the food. Actually, a bit of extra vitamin E won't hurt either, as it helps with skin and coat issues too. 200 IU a week won't hurt; be sure to get d-alpha tocopherol, NOT dl-alpha tocopherol which is synthetic and not nearly as effective.
And Sam, that Stan is one hot mutha! Damn.
Oh, and Eric's on my lap, purring and drooling up a storm, givin' a shout out to all his bitches' bitches! -

Mon, August 16, 2004 - 4:36 PMaww i'm jealous. i wish max would sit still long enough to sit in my lap. he's always on the go and never cuddles unless i swoop him up when he's sleepy and then he's cute. he likes the headrubs and kisses but he's not a cuddling cat. boo-hoo. -

Re: Flakes?
Mon, August 16, 2004 - 8:21 PMPOD is super cuddly - if I'm not holding the baby he is in my lap or trying to get there. The only thing is, he uses his big ole claws when he makes biscuits. I just yelped in pain a few minutes ago!
